Read MoreThe retro-style inspired eyewear shapes and keyhole nose designs found within the new Hally & Son eyewear collection remind us of the classic 1950-1960 era. We love the asymmetric temple accents, oversized end pieces and the attention to craftsmanship. These subtle details provide for visual interest from all angles, producing a truly unique high end look to the eyewear. The collection consists of both ophthalmic & sunglass models.
The Hally & Son eyewear collection is available in metal, water buffalo horn and replica horn. Unfortunately, we’ve discovered that real water buffalo horn cannot withstand the harsh dry cold Alberta environment, so unfortunately none of these pieces are on display at eye-bar.

See Coat Blue by Nikon is a revolutionary new anti-reflective lens application designed to reduce the distracting glare caused by high intensity blue light. See Coat Blue lenses by Nikon help to improve contrast and reduce eye strain by partially filtering out blue light rays, thus reducing distracting light scatter within the eye. These lenses may help to reduce visual fatigue when working on computer screens, smart phones, tablets and LED TV screens. As such, eye-bar recommends using Sea Coat Blue anti-reflective lenses on all reading glasses and all computer or office specific eyewear.
This new lens application still contains all the same properties as regular See Coat lenses by Nikon, including: 2 times more scratch resistance, anti-static dust-repellent properties, optimized light transparency, and easy to clean smudge resistance.

Your optometrist is qualified to handle the majority of eye care conditions that may arise during a routine eye health exam or emergency eye exam situation. In some eye conditions however, more advance eye care or medical care may be warranted. Some eye findings are simply warming sings of more serious underlying health issues that need to be addressed in order to resolve the visual symptoms you may be experiencing.
Like your family physician, your optometrists can help to coordinate the appropriate eye care required by the most appropriate health care provider. Occasionally, this may be an ophthalmologist that specializes in certain surgical procedures or specific eye diseases.
Why the Royal Alex Hospital? The Royal Alex Hospital is considered the home of ophthalmology in Edmonton and most local ophthalmologist work regular clinic shifts within the eye clinic. Typically, patients must be referred into the Royal Alex Hospital eye care unit by an optometrist, family physician or emergency room physician. These referrals are reserved for urgent eye care needs only and not routine eye health examinations.
If your eye condition is less urgent, and you are still wondering why you were referred to the Royal Alex Hospital. It’s probably because many specialized ophthalmologists have their full time clinics stationed at Royal Alex Hospital and your appointment may simply be with one of them.
FYI: If you ever have any questions or concerns about where one of our optometrist refers you to, please do not hesitate to contact the office. Your optometrist will be happy to explain the reason behind the decision and can make any necessary changes to the appointment when possible.

When you imagine 1970s glam rock, images of contrasting colours, oversize heels and, of course, highly embellished eyewear come to mind. When it comes to exaggerated eyewear, Elton John is definitely the king of it! His live performances put marvellous eyeglasses in the spotlight.
We love to look back at the glasses he wore. It's wonderful to think about the influence he had on bringing costume-like eyewear into mainstream culture. Oh, what fun to be an eyewear designer in the 1970s!

Tracy came across an interesting television show on National Geographic about optical illusions and our perception. We had to share the video! It's fascinating to see how our brain interprets what our eyes see and what our ears hear to interpret our perceived reality. Our brain is creating a reality based on everything that we see and hear, not just what we're focusing on.
Have you ever seen someone wipe out on TV and you cringe in pain? Skip to 20:15 to see a really entertaining example of this. This video is a little long, but it's worth checking out.
Skip to 25:54 to see how they create custom movie sound effects, like when it rains cheeseburgers in Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs. We couldn't stop watching!

Here's a shocker: 80% of all the ocular UV damage we experience happens before age 18. The eye of a 10 year old transmits upwards of 75% of UV light to the retina. By the age of 25, it is closer to 10% (1). As the weather (slowly) seems to be warming, your kids will be outdoors more and we want to help protect their eyes.
We have numerous different sizes and styles to choose from, since a proper fit is half the battle. An interesting fact: If sunglasses are moved only 6mm from the forehead, the amount of UV radiation reaching the eyes can go as his as 45%!(2)
Stop by the store, show us that you're following us, and pick out a pair that fits. You might want to call ahead to see if we still have some left! While supplies last.
